After investigating I found I had blown the fuse in the small cable leading from the battery to the socket you plug into.

Thanks a lot for the clear explanation. You strengthened me in the conviction to go for the Optimate.
My application is a 12 V 14 Ah batterie of a Kawasaki GPZ500.
As an electronical Engineer myself I'm very interested in the technical specifications of the Optimate; if possible it also would be nice to receive from you the instructions manual.
Can you also tell the main differences between the OptiMate III an the OptiMate III SP (I cannot find any info on you website of the SP version ...).
Again thanks for the support up till now ... for the time you spent I should by at least two of them ... ;-)

I realised I had a problem when the alarm went off at 2am because the battery had drained flat and set the alarm off!
